When you're buying plant material, you definitely want the most for your money. Freedom Giant Miscanthus was selected and bred for vigor. It grows faster and produces more rhizomes per plant. For evidence, let's compare a first-year planting of Freedom to a three-year old established plant from Illinois.
In July of 2009, students in Illinois took a three year old plant and showed its rhizome growth. "We dug up a clump and cleaned it off with a pressure washer to look at the rhizomes. The rhizome clump measured 17 inches by 14 inches, to a depth of 8 inches. The [plant] shoots measured 90 inches from the base to the tips of the leaves."
In the summer of 2009, REPREVE Renewables dug a Freedom Giant Miscanthus plant to measure its rhizome growth. Compare this one-year old plant to the three year old Illinois variety.
